The people living in the west during this time were hard working and invented many new things to make their life easier. In the Great Plains the cattle kept getting away and it was hard to keep them together. The cattle would destroy crops. So farmers tried to plant bushes to keep the cattle together, but the cattle stomped them down. In 1874 Joseph Glidden invented barbed wire. If you were a farmer during this time what would be the positives to having barbed wire? What would the negatives be Why? Water was scarce in the Great Plains. Water was important to farmers because they needed it for their crops to grow. Therefore, farmers began dry farming. This is where you farm with little water. You make a little ditch and collect water when it rains. The last problem farmers had to deal with was the rock-hard soil because a wooden plow would not work. John Deere invented the steel- bladed plow instead. Would you use the steel-bladed plow instead of the wood plow? Explain.
By 1893, there were five transcontinental railroads, which opened a door to a frontier. Now there were nine new states added to the Union. Railroads also created many new jobs such as, building the railroads and mining in the west. Would you like to build railroads? Why or why not?

If I was a farmer at this time, the positives of barbed wire would be that it kept cows in a certain place. The negatives would be that you have to pay a lot of money if you have a lot of cows. As a farmer, I would have used a steel-bladed plow because it would break through the dirt much easier. I wouldn’t have used the wood plow because the tough dirt would dull the blade and it would break easily. Would you have used the steel-bladed plow or the wood plow? Explain. If you were a farmer at this time how would your life be easier with the invention of the steel bladed plow? Explain.
ReplyDeleteI would not like to build railroads because it was hard work and took a very long time. Railroads opened up many other jobs in the west and I would rather work one of those jobs. Would you have helped build railroads to create more jobs for other people living in the west? Why or why not? It would have been very cool to have the chance to drive the golden spike in at Promontory Point, Utah. It would feel awesome to know that you just finished the transcontinental railroad, connecting the east to the west. Would you have liked to drive the golden spike into the railroad track at Promontory Point? Why or why not? How would it have felt that you just completed the transcontinental railroad? Explain.
If I was a farmer I would have a steel plow instead of a wood one because it could go though the harder and drier dirt. The steel plow will last longer. The wooden plow could break when I use it on the harder dirt.

ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome to drive the golden in to the ground. I would drive the golden spike in because it would be a once in a life time opportunity me. I would also be very lucky and that means that person who asked me trusts me.
ReplyDeleteI if I was a farmer I would probely use barbed wire because then the cattle would stop destorying my crops. But then that would get rid of open fields which would stop the cowboys way of life therefore ending the cowboy.
ReplyDeleteI would feel lucky to be the person to have the opportunity to drive the golden spike into the ground. I would feel excited too. However, I would also be nervous because I would not like to miss.
ReplyDeleteI would use the steel-bladed plow instead of the wood plow because the steel-bladed plow can dig into the ground better than the wooden-plow The wooden-plow can also break easier than the steel plow.
