History

In 1876 America celebrate its hundredth birthday by having a Centennial Exposition.  The exposition was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and took place from May to November The visitors saw hundreds of new or improved machines inventions with some of the most popular ones being the Corliss Steam Engine and the telephone.  All these machines needed electricity to work. Would you have went to the Centennial Exposition?  Why or why not?  If you went to the Centennial Exposition which invention would you be most excited to see?  Why?
Electricity made it possible for Thomas Edison to invent many new inventions.  Some of his new inventions were the copy machine, phonograph, light bulb, and moving picture machine.  Which of Edison’s inventions had the biggest impact?  Explain.
John D. Rockefeller became a leader in the oil industry.  He made secret deals with the railroad companies to pay half to get his oil shipped when other companies would pay full price. Rockefeller would be getting rich while they would be losing money.  After a while other oil companies would go out of business and Rockefeller would have a monopoly in the oil industry.  What do you think about Rockefeller’s secret deals with the railroads?  Explain.

  1. I would have went to the Centennial Exposition because I would like to see all the new inventions that have been made at that time. When I walked into the Centennial Exposition I would see rows and rows of new machines. I thought the copying machine was the most important invention because it allowed people to copy books. Before the copy machine you had to hand write everything and now all you have to do is copy something with the copying machine. How do you feel that all these new inventions are being made? Explain.
I thought the secret deal with the railroads was not fair because other companies had to pay more. In the secret deal Rockefeller only had to pay half the price while other companies had to pay full price. This is wrong because this would cause some companies to go out of business. Do you agree with what Rockefeller did? Why or why not?

  2. I believe that Mr. Rockefeller's secret deal with the railroads was wrong because if you were against him you were done for it. He was very unfair and a sneaky little thief. So I disagree with his stratagy of taking over the oil industry.

  3. Out of all of Edison's inventions I think the lightbulb made the biggest impact. The reason I think the lightbulb did is because stores could stay open all night. Also lightbulbs helped so you could see in your house at night. The lightbulb could also help people stay up at night to finish making their inventions.
