The three frontiers in the west were mining, farming, and ranching. The mining frontier was when people started moving west for gold. These people were called forty-niners. The farming frontier came after there was no gold left and people needed to farm. The ranching frontier was made to herd cattle in open fields and was at the same time as farming. The farming and ranching frontiers were only possible because of the railroads. Railroads allowed for the transfer of goods. Which of these three frontiers was the most important in the west? Why?
The settlers kept moving on the Indian’s land and the government tried to make treaties with them. However, the treaties didn’t work because people didn’t know about them or didn’t care. Since we took the Native American land they were put on reservations, which were on dry desert land. So they had battles with settlers. The last great victory for the Indians was the Battle of Little Bighorn where General George Custer lost all of his men and was killed by chiefs Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. After that the Americans won and forced Indians onto reservations. The Massacre of the Wounded Knee stopped the war because lots of Indian women, men, and children were killed. If you were working in the government how could you try to help the Indians? Explain.
Farmers in the west had to deal with cattle destroying their crops. Then Joseph Glidden invented the barbed wire to stop that. Barbed wire is wire that has sharp points every few inches and after cattle are scratched a couple of times they will eventually stop. Water was also scarce in the Great Plains so farmers used dry farming. Dry farming is when farmers dig small ditches to collect rain and after it rained farmers would flip the soil to get the water closer to the roots. Which of the inventions listed above is the most important? Why?
I think that barbed wire was the most important invention in that paragraph. It was important because it kept cows from eating the crops. It also kept cows in one place.
ReplyDeleteI think Ranching frontier was more important because we needed the cattle and they needed to get us the fields gone with grass and grass that was on the railroads. They were also important for milk and food so when they were done with mining they will have a meal for them when they get back.
ReplyDeleteWhich is more important barbed wire or dry farming? I think barbed wire is more important. Because then the cows can't get to the crops.
ReplyDeleteI think that farming frontier was more important, because after the miners did not make money they could start farming easier. they could get 160 acres in less than 2 years.
ReplyDeleteI think dry farming was the most important invention. I think it is the best because I would have money for planting the crops. Also I would have to go out everyday that it rained and flip the soil but it would be worth it. So that when the crops grew I would have money and food for my family.
ReplyDeleteBarbwire because it stop cattle. By stopping the cattle from stomping down the crops. The barbwire scratch them a few times and it cept them from trying to go threw it.
ReplyDeleteIf I was the government I would help them by letting them stay on their land and not killing the buffalo. I would help with planting and harvest. I would trade things for furs.
ReplyDeleteIf I worked for the government I would put up fences al around the reservations and signs that notified the white settlers that the land belonged to the Indians.
ReplyDeleteOf the three frontiers of the west, farming would be the most important frontier to me. As a farmer I would be able to get free land because of the Homestead Act. All I had to do was farm the land for five years and I can keep it as my own. I also chose farming because people needed food and farmers were able to ship their goods because of railroads. Do you think farming was the most important frontier in the west? Explain.
ReplyDeleteIf I were working in the government I would try to help the Indians. I would try to help the Indians by giving them money from taxes and letting them keep their land. I would also give them food and try to convince others to leave them alone. I would do all those things because the Americans were really mean to the Indians. If you were working for the American government would you do everything you could to help the Indians? What could you do? Explain.
I think the barbed wire is the most important invention in the west. I think barbed wire is important because if the cows got out they would ruin crops. Also farmers wouldn’t make much money. If you bought barbed wire you would save money by not having to worrying about your cattle. You also wouldn’t have to deal with planting new crops every time a cow got out and ruined your crops. If you didn’t have enough money to buy barbed wire what would you do to stop your cattle from getting out? Explain.
I would help the Indians by taking them some where else or by defeating the soldiers.
ReplyDeleteI think the barbed wire was the most inportant because it would help keep the crops better and away from the cattle.
