The two deadliest conflicts between Americans and the Native Americans were the battle at Little Bighorn and the Massacre at Wounded Knee. At the Battle at Little Bighorn, Crazy Horse, the leader of the Cheyenne tribe, and Sitting Bull, the leader of the Lakota Sioux tribe, were fighting General George Custer and his American forces. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse killed Custer and his whole army. The Battle at Little Bighorn was the Native Americans last great victory over the Americans. The Massacre at Wounded Knee was probably the saddest thing Americans did to the Native Americans. On the morning of December 29, 1890, in South Dakota, a lot of Teton men, women, and children were killed by American soldiers. Most of the time people wouldn’t kill women or children because they had nothing to do with the war. I think they killed women and children to make them scared. This would be the last time Native Americans would fight Americans. If you were an American soldier at this time would you be that desperate to kill women and children?
I bet you're wondering why there were so many battles between the Native Americans and the Americans. Well it all started when the Americans were trying to move west. Americans were killing the animals Native Americans depended on. They left the dead carcass lay on the ground. The Native Americans use the whole animal so when you leave it there it rots and they can't use it. The American wanted to make treaties because all they wanted to do was take their land. The treaties were unsuccessful because people in the west didn't hear about them for months. In the 1860s reservations were set up to move the Native Americans so we could take their land. If you were an American in the 1800s would treat the Native American in this same way? Would you kill their animals and take their land? Why or why not?
For people living in the west there were two kinds of houses they could live in. You could either build a soddie (made of chunks of grass and mud) or a dugout (whole dug into a hillside). Would you live in a dugout or a soddie? Why? When more people started to move near the same area a town would spring up. The children went to one room schools. As time passed railroads would begin to run through towns and would ship goods from the east. If you were a settler at this time how would your life change once railroads came through your town? Settlers could now send messages with a telegraph to the family they had back east. The change of the west affected everyone differently.
The challenges farmers in the west had to face could be devastating. Tornadoes were dangerous because their was no safety shelter and they destroyed crops. They also had to deal with grasshoppers. Grasshoppers can wipe out your entire crop in a short period of time. However, drought was the biggest problem farmers had. Drought killed crops because they had no water and crops need water to live. What impact do tornados, grasshoppers, and drought have on farmers living in the Great Plains today? Why?
Whether you were a Native American or a settler you dealt with a lot of changes living in the Great Plains.
If I lived in the west during the late 1800’s I would live in a soddie, not a dugout. Dugouts might collapse, but a soddie won’t because they are more stable. Dugouts also might be infested with bugs and snakes. When it rained the floor of your dugout turns into a muddy mess. A soddie is better because it is fireproof, has more space, and can be much cleaner.
ReplyDeleteTornadoes, grasshoppers, and droughts impact farmers in a much different way today than they did in the late 1800’s. In the past grasshoppers could destroy entire fields whereas today there is minimal crop damage from grasshoppers. However, tornadoes and droughts can still be a problem for farmers today. Both of these can completely ruin crops for farmers. Of these three problems, tornadoes, grasshoppers, and drought, which has the biggest impact on farmers today?
If I was a settler at this time my life would change once railroads came through town because I could get wood, seeds, tools, and other materials. I could also send my cows, chickens, and pigs to market for money for my family. I could also get in touch with my family back East. Overall railroads are going to make my life much easier in the west. If you were a farmer during this time would you prefer to live near town or farther out in the country? Why?
I would not kill and take the native americans land or the animals because the natives
ReplyDeletewould use the hole animal and we would just use the meat and sometimes we don't take all the meat and the native americans need these animals we would just leave the carcass laying on the ground
I would have a Soddie because it will be cool and kinda like a hideout, it will be cool in the summer and warm in the winter it is also fireproof so when a fire comes my family will be protected. but i would not like bugs and snakes in my food or in my house it will be really bad if a snake bit someone.
ReplyDeleteI would live in a soddie because you don't have to dig in the side of a hill.It would be a lot colder in a soddie than a dugout. It is really cool because it is made out of sod and dirt.It would also be built faster than a dugout.
ReplyDeleteI would live in a dugout. I would be able to be not be worried of a fire. The soddie's you have to find the sod to build your house. A dug out you only need a hillside then you start digging in the hillside.
ReplyDeleteI would not be that desperate because I don't want to hurt anybody. All there fighting for is land I'm not that desperate for land. You are taking somebody's life for land witch that is wrong it would mean more to save that human.
ReplyDeleteThe impacts on farmers in the Great Plains are tornados, grasshoppers, and droughts because tornados cause lots of damage to crops as well as grasshoppers and droughts. Tornados could probably damage your barn, if you have one, and it could damage the barbed wire and your cattle will run loose. Grasshoppers will eat your crops. Droughts are the WORST, droughts is a period of time where your area is super dry!
ReplyDeleteI would say droughts, because they are a big part of weather and we do not have tornados that often in Iowa. So I am going with drought because it happened last year and for a long time. The drought happened for several days.
